Carthage 77, Wheaton (Ill.) 75

Kenosha, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (10-6, 2-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday, January 24 with a 77-75 overtime win over CCIW-opponent and No. 8 Wheaton College (Ill., 14-2, 3-2 CCIW) at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. Freshman Scott Hood’s jump shot with three seconds to go in overtime sealed the upset for the Redmen. Carthage led by six points at halftime, 44-38, after leading by as much as eight points, 44-36, at 1:15. The Redmen opened up a nine-point lead in the second half, 50-41, at 15:07 before the Thunder used a 17-8 run to tie the game at 58-58 with 3:54 to play in regulation. With Carthage leading by four 66-62, Wheaton’s Martin Trimiew nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to one, 66-65, at 0:44. The Thunder’s Jonathan Stevens missed the front end of a two-shot foul with four seconds to go but made the back end to leave the contest tied at 66-66 in regulation. In overtime, Wheaton had a 75-72 lead with 49 seconds to go following a layup by Trimiew. Carthage’s Kevin Menard got a friendly roll on a three-point attempt with 28 seconds to play, and that knotted the score at 75-75, setting up Scott Hood’s game-winning jumper with three seconds to go. Wheaton was unable to get the ball across the time line on its last possession. Carthage shot 39 percent for the game (28-72), while the Thunder shot 50 percent (25-50). Kevin Menard had 22 points on seven-of-14 field goals, including five-of-five from three-point range, and five rebounds. Theo Powell had 21 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Scott Hood tallied 17 points and four assists. Wheaton’s Joel Kolmodin scored a game-high 29 points on seven-of-16 field goals and 13-of-16 from the free-throw line, along with 10 rebounds and six assists. Martin Trimiew had 19 points.
