Wartburg 65, Luther 55

WAVERLY, IA — Men’s basketball moves win string to six

Wartburg College keyed a 65-55 win over Luther in Iowa Conference men’s basketball action Friday, Jan. 23, with a 13-5 run in the opening six minutes. The Knights (11-4 overall, 6-2 IIAC), extending their current win streak to six games, never trailed and held as big as a 15-point lead.

Junior guard Jordan Atchison of Waverly came up big for head coach Dick Peth’s squad. He led the Orange and Black with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Senior center Kip Pedersen of West Branch was next on the scoring parade with nine and added one of two blocked shots for the team.

The Norse (7-8 overall, 4-3 IIAC), after trailing by the 15-point margin late in the opening frame, rallied in the second half. Head coach Jeff Olinger’s squad pulled to within 42-38 on a three-pointer by senior guard Andy Rump with 12:05 remaining. Wartburg quickly countered with an 8-2 run for a 50-40 margin that salted the game away as the visitors from Decorah never got closer than nine the rest of the way.

Senior forward Jake Lappe was the top scorer for Luther with 14 points. Rump ended with 11, hitting three treys in the process.
