Catholic 58, St. Mary's (Md.) 49

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD — The St. Mary's College men's basketball team lost their first home game of the season on Wednesday evening, falling to Catholic University in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) contest, 58-49. With the win, the Cardinals avoided a four-game skid and improved to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the CAC, while the Seahawks fell to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Both teams had difficulty scoring in the first half, as both connected on just 7-of-21 (33.3 %) field goal attempts in the half. The Cardinals held a slim 24-22 lead at halftime thanks to ten points from senior forward Will Morley (Olney, MD/Good Counsel). Sophomore forward Joe Farina (Laurel, MD/Pallotti) scored ten points in the first half for the Seahawks.

The Cardinals led the contest throughout the second half. The Seahawks would get as close as two points at 27-25 at the 17:07 mark when freshman guard Dan Engelstad (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) hit the game's first three-pointer. Catholic would push the lead to as much as eight points with 1:12 remaining before the Seahawks resorted to fouling to stop the game clock and try to keep the game in reach.

Morley led the way for the Cardinals with 22 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. He also collected three steals in the contest. Senior forward Blair Mills (Hebron, MD/Wicomico) added nine points while sophomore forward Shane Sowden (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth's) scored seven points.

For the Seahawks, Farina scored a game-high 23 points connecting on 10-of-18 field goal attempts. Engelstad added nine points, four rebounds, and three assists, while senior forward Donovan Gaspard (Los Angeles, CA/Crenshaw) contributed with eight points and four rebounds.

The Seahawks (4-9, 2-3 CAC) will return to action on Saturday, January 24, when they travel to York College (PA) for a CAC contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
