McDaniel College’s Alan Hoyt (Lexington Park, MD / Great Mills) will not forget this night anytime soon. The senior sank a three-pointer with 15:24 in the second half to get his 1,000th career point en route to 18 on the night, as well as the biggest win of his four-year career on the Hill, an 83-75 overtime shocker over Centennial rival Johns Hopkins.
Hoyt finished the game with 1,008 points in his career, and became the 17th player in the program’s history to reach the milestone.
McDaniel trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half, and was in a 10-point hole with 4:26 left in regulation after the Blue Jays’ Eric Toback (Ellicott City, MD / Mt. Hebron) hit a three.
McDaniel answered with a 10-0 run to the finish. The run was sparked by a Kyle O’Connor (Columbia, MD / Mt. St. Joe’s) lay-up, followed by a three-pointer from the freshman guard on the next Terror possession.
O’Connor finished the night with a game-high 27 points and six rebounds. 13 of his points came in the final 15 minutes of the game.
O’Connor was not alone hitting from behind the arc. McDaniel connected on 50 percent (11 of 22) of its treys in the game. Will Talesnick (Rockville, MD / Magruder) joined in on that action with 1:46 left in regulation to draw the teams even at 68. The squads traded turnovers and missed jumpers to lead up to the buzzer.
In the extra frame Talesnick picked up the scoring where the Terror left off nailing the third of his three treys attempted in the game to put the Terror ahead. McDaniel would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. The Terror hit four of its five field goals attempted in overtime. The Blue Jays hit on just two of their 10 shots in the extra period.
McDaniel’s Sam Anstead (New Carrollton, MD / DeMatha) joined Hoyt and O’Connor in double-figures with 15 points. Johns Hopkins saw five of its players score in double-digits, and was led offensively by Frank Mason’s (Silver Spring, MD / Barrie School) 15, and Matt Righter’s (Clarion, PA / Lawrenceville Prep) 14 points. Danny Nawrocki (Syosset, NY / Chaminade) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 18 rebounds.
Hopkins outworked McDaniel on the glass 46-26, and managed to grab 22 boards on the offensive end.
The win snaps a six game losing streak for McDaniel, and marks the first McDaniel win in the series in 12 tries. McDaniel’s last win against the Blue Jays came back in 1997, a 79-70 win, also at the Gill Center in Westminster.
The Green Terror returns to action on Saturday when its hosts Gettysburg in Centennial play.
