Mary Washington shot just .338 from the field but it was still far superior to Gallaudet, which made just 16 of 54 shots (.296 from the field), 2 of 14 3-pointers and 16 of 28 from the free throw line.
Both teams began the game frigid, with the score standing at 2-2 after seven minute. It was just 14-10, Mary Washington leading with 7:20 to play. That’s when the Eagles went on a 14-3 run to take a 15-point lead. The Bison closed to within 10 at the half. The lead remained between 15 and eight points until a critical stretch with less than seven minutes to play. The Eagles outscored Gallaudet 10-1 over the next1:41 to take a 21-point lead. Freshman Mike Lee had a pair of 3-pointers in the run as he finished with a team-high 19 points. Sophomore Kevin Moore was the only other Mary Washington player in double figures, with 10. Evan Fowler had six points, seven assists, two rebounds and two steals.
The Bison outrebounded Mary Washington, 39-38, with the advantage coming on the offensive glass. The Bison made 13 more trips to the foul line just made just five more free throws than the Eagles (9-6, 4-1), who also made 6 of 26 from 3-point range. The only Gallaudet player who was able to find his game was sophomore Robert Haney Jr. Haney finished with game-highs in points, rebounds and blocks as he had 24 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks. He also had four assists. Onye Davis played well off the bench for the Bison as he set career-highs with four points and six rebounds in just 14 minutes.
Gallaudet (7-9, 1-4) next plays on Saturday when it travels to Marymount.
