Kenyon 70, Denison 65

Granville, Ohio — After watching the Kenyon Lords play 40 minutes of basketball, there is no one in the gym who could dispute the fact that they “live by the three and die by the three.” On Wednesday night in Livingston Gymnasium the Lords hoisted up 33 treys however, it was a three-point play the old fashion way that propelled them to a 70-65 victory over the Big Red.

With the score tied at 65-65 with 1:20 following a clutch 3-point basket by Denison’s Chris Hull, Kenyon took some time off the clock before attempting a 15-foot jumper by Tyler Rehm with :57 left. Reserve center Derrick Herman came up with the offensive rebound and got the follow-up attempt to fall all-the while being fouled in the act. Herman went to the line and sank his free throw to give Kenyon a three point lead with :55 seconds left. Denison’s Clint Shepherd got a look to potentially tie the game at the :43 mark but the Lords’ Matt Formato came up with the rebound to lock up the victory.

Denison was a led by freshman Danny Hodgkinson and Hull. Hodgkinson finished with 25 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in 40 minutes. Hull was 9-of-14 from the field and scored 22 points while pulling down seven rebounds. He was especially accurate from beyond the arc, knocking down 4-of-5 3-pointers.

Alex Neuman paced Kenyon with 18 points while Formato chipped in 16 points. The Lords were 10-of-33 from 3-point range and turned the ball over only three times on the night.

Denison shot 45 percent from the field and was 8-of-22 from 3-point range. They outrebounded Kenyon 37-32 and finished with 11 turnovers.

Denison will host Allegheny this Saturday at 3 p.m. before traveling to Oberlin next Wednesday night for a match-up with the Yeomen. Tonight’s loss drops the Big Red’s record to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
