Bridgewater (Va.) 82, Roanoke 78

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Bridgewater College built a 13-point lead in the second half and then held off a late Roanoke College rally to defeat the Maroons, 82-78, in ODAC action Wednesday night.

The teams battled to a 35-35 tie at the half and the Maroons led by one, 41-40, on a Kevinn Hunter layup with 16:53 left in the game.

The Eagles then reeled off nine straight points to lead by eight with 13:44 to play. A jumper by Ricky Easterling and a dunk by Jeff Schwalm put the Eagles on top, 44-41. Easterling then followed with a 3-pointer and a 15-footer, giving the Eagles a 49-41 lead.

After a jumper by Roanoke’s Mike Zurek, the Eagles, BC rattled off seven straight points to take its biggest lead of the game. All the points came from the foul line as Easterling hit seven straight foul shots for a 56-43 Bridgewater lead.

A 3-pointer by Roanoke’s MyJuan Hall with 8:47 left trimmed the deficit back to single digits and the Maroons methodically whittled away at the margin. When Drew Crowder hit a layup with 4:32 left the Maroons trailed by just four 67-63.

Roanoke would not get any closer until another 3-pointer by Hall cut the deficit to three, 77-74, with just 44 seconds left. The Eagles hit 6-of-7 free throws in the final 31 seconds to keep the Maroons at bay.

Easterling scored a season-high 31 points to lead the Bridgewater attack. Ryan Lambert finished with a double-double as he scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Jeff Schwalm just missed a double-double with nine points and eight assists.

Jared Butler paced Roanoke with 24 points and Hunter scored 18. Hall added 15 and Crowder finished with 12.

The Eagles hit 90 percent from the foul line, making 27-of-30 attempts while the Maroons made just 7-of-10. Roanoke offset Bridgewater’s effort from the foul line by making 9-of-19 shots from 3-point range.

The Eagles improved to 10-5 overall and 5-4 in the ODAC while Roanoke dropped to 8-7 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
