Cherelle Walls Leads Engineers with 14 Points


The MIT women’s basketball team dropped its seventh game in a row, falling to NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College, 67-48, on Tuesday night. The Lyons’ (12-2, 4-1 NEWMAC) Christine Godin led all scorers with 22 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field. Cherelle Walls powered the Engineers’ (1-9, 0-4 NEWMAC) offense, tallying 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor and sinking 6-of-7 at the charity stripe. She also collected eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action.

Jonee Billy put Mount Holyoke on the scoreboard first, nailing a jumper at 18:40. Christine Godin provided the Lyons’ next four points, building a 6-0 lead. Tech finally got its first points of the day on a jumper by Rayna Zacks with 15:35 remaining. Back-to-back shots by Samia Mahjub knotted the game at six. MIT took its first lead of the game at 13:16 when Andrea Dooley sank a jumper from the floor. Mount Holyoke tied the game with a basket by Sara Belding, ending a five minute scoring drought. Belding then set up Emily Groth for a three-pointer to regain the lead. Baskets by Zacks and Maria Hidalgo gave the Engineers their final lead of the game (12-11) at the 11:39 mark. Tech tied the game two more times before Mount Holyoke used a 16-9 run to close the half with a 32-25 advantage.

A 10-2 run by the Lyons in the opening minutes of the second stanza helped build a 15-point lead (42-27) at 15:52. After trading baskets during the next three minutes, Mount Holyoke went on another explosive run, extending its advantage to 23 (62-39). Cherelle Walls ignited MIT’s offense, tallying seven points during the last five minutes of the game.

Rayna Zacks finished the game with seven rebounds and 12 points, shooting 50% (6-of-12) from the floor. Karen Kinnaman posted a team-high 10 boards, two blocks, and seven points.

For the Lyons, Sara Belding tallied 18 points including hitting 4-of-4 from behind the arc. Jonee Billy grabbed a team-best 10 caroms.

The next game for MIT will be on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts Lasell College.
