Concordia (Wis.) 85, Carthage 71

MEQUON, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (9-6, 1-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) dropped its fourth-straight game on Tuesday, January 20, losing to non-conference opponent Concordia University (Wis., 10-6), 85-71, at John Buuck Fieldhouse in Mequon, Wis. The Concordia (Wis.) game was Redmen’s final non-conference game of the year. Carthage led by four points at halftime, 44-40, after leading by as much as nine, 23-14, at 12:45. The Redmen built another nine-point lead, 50-41, at 17:23 second period, before the Falcons went on a 30-11 run to take a 71-61 lead at 4:51. Carthage pulled to within six, 73-67, at 3:14, but Concordia (Wis.) closed things out with a 12-4 run to win by 14 points, 85-71. The Falcons shot 48 percent for the game (26-54), including 54 percent in the second half (14-26), while the Redmen shot just 41 percent for the game (25-61). Concordia’s Ryan Wietor scored a game-high 33 points on 11-of-18 field goals and a perfect seven-of-seven from the free-throw line, along with eight rebounds. Adam Jones added 16 points for the Falcons, and Billy Bynum had nine points and 10 assists. Theo Powell led the Redmen with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Kevin Menard had 16 points, and Pat Kalamatas added 12 points and a game-high 13 boards. Carthage plays host to CCIW-opponent and No. 8 Wheaton College (Ill.) on Saturday, January 24 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. (7:30 p.m.).
