Clark 89, MIT 79

WORCESTER, MA… — The Clark University men’s basketball team held on to defeat MIT 89-79 in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game. Both teams entered the game 2-0 in the NEWMAC. Clark started the game with a 32-10 run and led by 22 points with 9:17 remaining in the first stanza. The Cougars were red hot from the floor shooting 65.6 percent (12-for-32) and 61.5 percnent (8-for-13) from long range in the first half and had seven players in the scoring column to build a 28-point (51-23) lead heading into the locker room. Senior Dave McNamara (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) led the Cougars in the first half with 15 points (6-8 FG, 2-2 3FG). MIT, who was held to 23 points and 39.1 percent shooting, committed 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of the game. Trailing by 22 points with 8:36 to play MIT used a 23-13 run to pull within 12 points with 1:46 to play. MIT’s junior Adam Gibbons (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater-Raritan) led the charge for the Engineers in the second half scoring 19 of his team-high 23 points. Gibbons went 7-for-8 from the floor and 5-6 from long range for the game. MIT held the Cougars to 35.6 percent shooting in the second half and shot 60.0 percent overall and from the floor and converted 10-of-15 from long range (66.7) to climb back in to the game. For the game both teams were impressive from long range, MIT shot 61.9 percent (13-for-21) and Clark went 14-for-27 (51.9). McNamara ended the game with a game-high and season-high 28 points including 5-for-6 from behind the arc. He was 10-for-13 overall from the field and 3-for-3 from the line. Junior Justin Kimball (Ithaca, NY/Winchendon Prep) came off the bench and added 15 points (7-for-8 FG), three assists and three steals. Sophomore Mike D’Auria (Newton, MA/Newton South) added 21 points for MIT, who fell to 8-5 and 2-1 in the conference. The Cougars improved to 8-5 and won their third consecutive NEWMAC game to improve to 3-0. Clark will travel to crosstown rival WPI on Saturday, January 24 for a 4:00 pm start.
