Christopher Newport 74, North Carolina Wesleyan 60

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOWNS NC WESLEYAN 74-60

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – CNU’s women’s basketball team got back on the winning track with a 74-60 win over NC Wesleyan Tuesday evening in the Freeman Center.
The Lady Captains scored the first nine points and then saw their lead disappear as the Lady Bishops tied the score at 17-17 midway through the first half. CNU eventually took the lead into the locker room at halftime 34-32.
CNU was just 12-of-31 (39%) from the floor, 1-of-3 (33%) on three-pointers, and 9-of-14 (64%) from the free throw line. NC Wesleyan was 10-of-25 (40%) from the floor, 3-of-8 (38%) on three’s and 9-of-10 (90%) from the charity stripe.
The Lady Captains took over in the second half forcing 10 Lady Bishop turnovers and holding them to 28 points on just 10-of-27 (37%) shooting from the floor, 1-of-8 (25%) on three’s and 7-of-12 (58%) from the free throw line.
CNU scored 40 second half points as they went 16-of-29 (55%) from the floor, 1-of-2 (50%) on three’s and 7-of-9 (78%) from the free throw line.
For the game, NC Wesleyan was 20-of-52 (39%) from the floor, 4-of-16 (25%) on three’s and 16-of-22 (73%) from the free throw line. CNU finished 28-of-60 (47%) from the floor, 2-of-5 (40%) on three’s and 16-of-23 (70%) from the charity stripe.
NC Wesleyan was led by Jennie Richardson with 15 points. Elizabeth Ansley added 13 points and Kimberly High and April Wilson added 10 each.
For the Lady Captains, Tomorrow Lofton led the way with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists on 7-of-11 shooting coming off the bench. Amber Hallman finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Jenna Reese contributed 10 points.
The Lady Bishops fall to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the USA South. CNU improves to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the USA South.
The Lady Captains return to action this coming Saturday as they travel to Ferrum College with tip-off set for 2 pm.
