Carleton 88, Gustavus Adolphus 79

Northfield, Minn. — Megan Vig scored 22 points, making a jumper in the lane that forced overtime with 17 seconds left, and Kristi Colbenson added 17 points and nine rebounds, canning 6-for-6 free throws in the overtime as No. 15 Carleton rallied past No. 14 Gustavus Adolphus, 88-79.

Angie Peterson led all scorers with 25 points, 19 in the first half, to lead Gustavus (11-3, 9-2 MIAC). Beth Freeman tallied 18 points and eight rebounds for Carleton (13-1, 10-1 MIAC), who is now one game back of conference unbeaten St. Benedict in the MIAC standings. The Gusties are two games back of the Blazers with the loss.

The Gusties led 74-69 with 1:42 left after Peterson split on a pair of free throws, Katie Freeman was fouled trying to put back her own miss and made both, cutting the Gustie lead to three. The Knights forced a turnover on the next possession and Vig cashed in on a 12-foot baseline jumper. After Peterson split on a pair of free throws on the other end, Vig drove the lane and canned a five-foot shot with 17 seconds left, and the Gusties couldn’t get a clean look, sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime, Carleton converted 9-for-10 from the free-throw line and was 2-for-4 from the floor while holding the visitors to 2-for-6 and forcing two turnovers.

Both teams shot the ball extremely well. Carleton converted an amazing 70.4 percent of its first-half shots and 56.9 percent (33-for-58) for the game. The Knights made their first six shots but still only led by two, 14-12, as they turned the ball over nine times during the stretch. Gustavus, meanwhile converted on 61.9 percent (13-for-21) of its second-half shots and 51.6 (32-for-62) for the game. Both teams were turnover-prone, as Carleton committed a season-high 26 miscues, compared to 23 for the Gusties.

The first half was evenly played, featuring six ties in the first six minutes. Carleton used a quick 8-0 run to break out to an 18-12 lead, eventually building it to 12 before the visitors came roaring back behind Peterson. She canned a triple, scored in the lane and added a jumper as the Gusties used a 12-2 run to pull within two, 38-26. Carleton pushed the lead back to six before setting for a 46-44 halftime lead.

The Gusties opened the second half on a 10-4 run and led by as many as seven, 70-63.

Linnea Engel scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds before fouling out for the Knights. Kristin Kachelmyer tallied 11 points and six rebounds for the Gusties while Sara Boldt and Bri Monahan were also in double figures with 10 points each.

The Knights return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 21, hosting Bethel College in a women's/men's doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. The Gusties host Augsburg at 7:30 p.m.
