St. Louis, Mo., January 18, 2004 --- Washington University’s men’s basketball team knocked off Case Western Reserve University 89-73 Sunday afternoon at the WU Field House. Sophomore point guard Scott Stone, St. Louis, Mo. (MICDS) posted career-highs of 17 points and seven rebounds, as well as six assists to lead the Bears to their ninth win in the last 10 games.
WU sputtered out of the gates as CWRU jumped out to a 16-6 lead behind some hot shooting. The Spartans connected on six of their first 10 shots and wore the net—or perhaps the rim—out. At the 13:26 mark, the game was delayed for 26 minutes because a cracked rim at CWRU’s offensive end needed to be replaced.
When play resumed, Washington U. went on a 13-1 run while CWRU missed its next six shots on the new hoop. Senior Barry Bryant, St. Louis, Mo. (Parkway Central) and Stone tallied six points apiece during the run. Stone’s back-to-back three-pointers gave the Bears a 21-17 lead and forced a Spartans timeout.
Stone led the Bears with 15 points in the first half while Bryant had 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field. CWRU’s Matt Cannan had a team-high 12 points, but WU led 46-32 at the half.
The Bears pushed their lead to more than 20 points and led by that margin for the majority of the second half. Junior Anthony Hollins, Tempe, Ariz. (Corona del Sol) continued to be WU’s workhorse on the block, tallying 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Neal Griffin, St. Charles, Mo. (St. Charles West) added a career-high 10 points and three assists. Cannan finished with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for Case Western Reserve.
Washington U. (10-4, 2-1 UAA) is back in action Fri., Jan. 23 against New York University. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at the Coles Sports and Recreation Center in New York City.
