DePauw 72, Sewanee 68

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Todd Capes scored a career-high 21 points to lead DePauw to a 72-68 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over visiting Sewanee. The Tigers improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the SCAC while Sewanee dropped to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

The two teams battled through a first half that included 23 fouls and 29 free throw attempts and concluded with DePauw holding a 36-31 edge.

DePauw built its largest lead of the game at 11 on a couple of occasions in the second half and still led 67-57 after Alex Stewart's layup with 4:52 remaining. Sewanee put together an 11-2 run capped off by Chris Eddy's layup with 1:07 left to trim DePauw's lead to 70-68.

The host Tigers missed a shot on their next possession and Sewanee rebounded, but a turnover with nine seconds left gave the ball back to DePauw. Capes made a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to seal the win.

Capes nailed 11 of 13 free throws in the win as the Tigers were 22 of 34 as a team. Stewart added 14 points and Jon Owens followed with 10.

Jason Smith led four Sewanee players in double figures with 15. Jeremy Cothern added 14 with Aaron Breeden and Eugene Talley each scoring 10.

Sewanee held a commanding 39-27 advantage on the boards with Cothern grabbing eight and Allen Hofammann hauling down six. Stewart paced DePauw with five rebounds. Joey Hanger led DePauw with five assists in the win.

DePauw shot 45 percent for the game and 50 percent in the second half, while Sewanee connected on 47 percent for the game and nearly 56 percent in the second half.
