The YellowJackets (2-11, 1-1) used a strong offensive game plan to defeat the first place team in the East Division. The Eagles (5-9, 2-1) came into the contest tied for first place in the league with UT Dallas. This is the second consecutive season that the YellowJackets have come into Ozarks and left with a win.
Potter led the YellowJackets in the first half with 17 points on 4-of-4 shooting from three-point range and also drilled 5-of-6 free throw attempts. LETU went into the half tied with the Eagles, 44-44. The Eagles closed the first half on an 8-0 run.
The second half featured Randy Aram and junior Julius McClaskey taking control of the offense. Besides Aram’s 22 points in the second half, McClaskey, who was held scoreless in the first half, added 14 points of his own. Aram ended up the game with a career high 29 points and led the team with seven rebounds and two blocks. McClaskey pulled down four boards and dished out three assists.
The Eagles were led by Brent Johnson’s 23 points and seven assists. Mike Taylor added 16 points and eight rebounds while Geoff Owens contributed 12 points to the team.
Each team handled the ball well and were even in terms of shooting and rebounding. The YellowJackets held the edge from three-point land. The YellowJackets made five more treys than the Eagles. LETU shot a season best 53.6 percent from the floor and converted on foul shots, 28-of-37. Senior Tim Dygert was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line late in the game to help seal the victory. The Eagles hit on 51.6 percent of their shots and 20-of-27 free throws.
The YellowJackets’ bench scored 35 points behind Potter and sophomore Jason Briley’s 11 points.
