TIGERS TAKE ROAD VICTORY OVER ROANOKE, 79-69

SALEM, VA—Hampden-Sydney’s top-ranked basketball team scored a road victory over Old Dominion Athletic Conference-foe Roanoke, 79-69, Saturday as Tiger All-American Jeff Monroe (Raleigh, NC/Broughton) scored a team-high 19 points. With the win, the Tigers improve to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC as the Maroons fall to 8-5 and 2-4.
Monroe’s 19 paced the hot-shooting Tigers, who finished the game shooting 51 percent (29-57) from the floor. Overall, four different players scored in double-figures for Hampden-Sydney as senior Brandon Randall (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) and junior Brian Gunn (Danville, VA/George Washington) each scored 13, while senior David Willson (Memphis, TN/MUS) recorded a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds as Hampden-Sydney out-rebounded RC, 44-34.
The Tigers led by five at the break and owned as much as a 13-point second half lead (71-58) after a pair of three’s by freshman Kevin Forrester (Wytheville, VA/George Wythe) and a layup and free throw by Jason Holman (Amelia, VA/Amelia Co.) with 7:53 to play.
Roanoke guard Jared Butler paced a Maroon run with five points, while senior forward Drew Crowder added four of his game-high 22 as the Tiger advantage dropped to seven points, 74-67, with 5:33 to play. Free throws by Tiger senior Mike Thompson and a running jumper by Gunn iced the game for Hampden-Sydney over the final three minutes of action.
Crowder’s 22 points paced the Maroons as the senior hit 6-of-10 from three point range. Butler and Jason Graffam each added ten points for Roanoke, which shot 37 percent (26-70) from the floor. Overall, the Maroons out-shot the Tigers from three-point land as the team made 34 percent (9-26), compared to H-SC’s 29 percent (5-17). Neither team shot the ball well from the line as the Maroons finished the game shooting 50 percent (8-16) from the charity stripe, while the Tigers shot 47 percent (16-34).
Hampden-Sydney returns to action Sunday as the team takes on Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA, at 5 pm. The game will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics.
