With 3.2 seconds left on the clock and after leading throughout most of the game, Rhodes found itself in a "do or die" situation against the visiting Hendrix Warriors on Saturday 1/17. Trailing the Warriors by a score of 53-54, Rhodes' junior guard Kevin Campion inbounded the basketball to teammate Matthew Jakes and quickly started sprinting down the floor. Jakes immediately returned the ball to Campion who took an off-balance shot with less than 1 second remaining and with a Hendrix defender in his face. Nevertheless, the ball hit nothing but net, and the Lynx earned an amazing 56-54 SCAC win as the Rhodes crowd erupted and stormed the floor.
Both teams played aggressive defense throughout the game. The Lynx jumped out to a quick lead in the 1st half, and held the Warriors to 1-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Rhodes went into halftime with a 29-22 lead, but Hendrix battled back in the 2nd half, which proved to be a dog fight that included several lead changes. With less than a minute to play, the Lynx actually held a 53-52 lead, but fouled Warrior Justin Jarimillo on a jump shot. Jarimillo hit both free throws, putting Hendrix up by one point and setting the stage for Campion's heroic game-winning shot.
The Lynx were led in scoring by sophomore forward Matthew Jakes, who pumped in 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, recording his first collegiate double-double. Team captains Rami Almefty and Austin Lutz netted 13 points and 10 points respectively, and Campion finished the game with 9 points. The Lynx held Hendrix to just 39.7 percent from the field and 20 percent from 3-point range.
With the win, Rhodes improves to 6-7 overall (2-3 SCAC). Next weekend, the Lynx will be on the road at Sewanee (Friday 1/23) and Centre College (Sunday 1/25).
