Elms 74, Becker 67

CHICOPEE, MA — Elms College senior forward Deshawn Hawkins (West Hartford, CT) recorded his second consecutive 19-point game, including a key jumper with 20 seconds remaining to help lift the Blazers to a 74-67 win over Becker College in Saturday afternoon’s North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men’s basketball game at the Maguire Center.

The Blazers improved to 3-8 overall, 3-3 NAC. The Hawks fell to 2-9 overall, 1-6 NAC.
Elms College led 41-36 at intermission before Becker used a 7-2 run in the first three minutes of the second half, capped off by a 3-pointer by senior guard Sam Fernandez (Elizabeth, NJ) to tie the game at 43-43.

From there, the two teams exchanged the lead 11 times with neither leading by more than five points until the game’s closing seconds.

Freshman guard John Ancrum (Harlem, NY) and senior forward Sean Furey (Great Barrington, MA) netted 10 points apiece to also reach double figures for the Blazers in the win.

Becker College senior forward Richard Fazzi (Somerdale, NJ) led all scorers with 24 points on 10 of 15 shooting from the field. Sophomore center Jeff Kotkowski (Melrose, MA) recorded the game’s only double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Hawks.

The Blazers play host to Amherst College, currently the No. 2 team in the nation in last week’s D3hoops.com poll, on Tuesday, January 20. Game time is 8:00 p.m. at the Maguire Center.
