Scranton 67, Drew 54

Madison, N.J. — MELLODY, DOUGHERTY COMBINE FOR 32 POINTS AS 3RD-RANKED LADY ROYALS MOVE TO 13-0 ON THE SEASON WITH 67-54 WIN AT DREW IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE ACTION SATURDAY AFTERNOON

MADISON, N.J.—Freshman forward Taryn Mellody scored a season-high 16 points and senior guard Katie Dougherty had 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead The University of Scranton to a 67-54 victory over Drew University in Freedom Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Kelly Lewandowski came off the bench and connected on all five of her field goal attempts to score 12 points as the Lady Royals, ranked 3rd in this week’s national poll by D3hoops.com, improved to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in the Freedom Conference. Drew, which trailed by only five at intermission, 36-31, was led by Melissa Kraft with 13 points and Courtney Cunningham and Jennifer Weldon added 12 and 11 points, respectively. The loss dropped the Rangers to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.

The Lady Royals out-rebounded Drew, 46-27, but were guilty of 19 turnovers. Mellody’s previous high was a 15-point effort in an 84-61 victory over Lycoming College on December 3.

The win was career victory number 565 for 24th-year head coach Mike Strong.

Scranton will host Freedom Conference rival King’s College this Wednesday, January 21, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Long Center.
