Millsaps hit the road last weekend (1/16 and 1/18/04) for their annual trip through Texas as they faced SCAC foes Southwestern and Trinity. The results were not pretty as the Majors lost 83-55 (Southwestern) and 68-43 (Trinity). Millsaps fell to 2-12, 1-4 in the SCAC, while Southwestern improved to 9-6, 3-2, and Trinity held on to first place in the conference at 12-3, 4-1.
Against the Pirates of Southwestern, the Majors started slowly and never recovered. Southwestern used unanswered first half runs of 9 and 8 points to take a comfortable halftime lead, 42-20.
The Majors played much better in the second half but the deficit was too much as the Pirates cruised to victory. Freshman Demetrus Caldwell continued to impress in his rookie campaign by hitting 57% of his shots and was the only Major in double figures with 19. Brad Greenhaw, Tyler Warren, and Justin LeBlanc added 8 points each. The diminutive Greenhaw (5’8”) led the team with 7 rebounds, followed by Caldwell and Carr Van Brocklin with 6 each.
For Southwestern, Justin Westmoreland had 15 points, Aaron Bowser tallied 11, and Dan Slezak added 10. Jared Woytasczyk paced the Pirates with 8 boards.
Millsaps managed only 33.3% from the field while Southwestern hit for 50% The Majors also logged 20 turnovers compared to 14 for the Pirates.
