Plattsburgh State 80, Cortland State 65

Plattsburgh, N.Y. — Curtis Smith and Cameron Arterberry each scored 23 points as Plattsburgh defeated visiting Cortland, 80-65, in a SUNYAC contest. Johnnie Carter added 17 points for the Cardinals, who improved to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Arterberry and Carter each pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and Smith also recorded eight assists and three steals.

Freshman guard Dave Jutton scored 21 of his career-high 27 points in the opening half for Cortland (7-3, 1-2), which had its five-game win streak snapped. Jutton finished the game 11-of-17 from the field to easily eclipse his previous high of 13 points. Sophomore forward Jon Rother added 16 points, 13 in the first half. Sophomore forward Frank Ranieri recorded 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds, all in the second half. He was limited to seven minutes of playing time in the first half due to foul trouble.

Junior guard Justin O'Garrow matched his Red Dragon high with nine assists. He also registered four steals. Sophomore guard Simon Skrelja grabbed eight rebounds in only 12 minutes of action.

Cortland rallied from an 11-point deficit midway through the first half and actually took the lead late in the period. Two Carter baskets, however, including a three-pointer in the final seconds, gave Plattsburgh a 42-40 lead at halftime.

The Cardinals never trailed in the second half. Cortland was still within two points at 51-49 with 13:25 left, but the hosts went on a 13-2 run to take a 64-51 lead with 6:50 remaining. The lead was at least 11 points the rest of the way.
