Nichols 66, Salve Regina 61

Newport, R.I. — NEWPORT, Rhode Island -- Salve Regina University women’s basketball built a 20-point lead by halftime (43-23) which helped overcome a horrendous shooting performance in the second half to defeat visiting Nichols College, 68-47, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game in Newport, Rhode Island.

Kelly Mallon [So./Stormville NY] had 10 of her game-high 16 points in the first half featuring a trio of trifectas. Salve Regina shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the floor in the first twenty minutes including five of seven three-pointers. All eight players in the lineup had points in the first half.

After intermission, the Seahawks held their largest lead of the game (61-34) following a Mallon made free-throw with 9:45 remaining. Salve Regina would score just seven points the rest of the way, and actually went scoreless for the last 4:45 after a Jennifer Leahy [So./Cresskill NJ] jumper.

Kendra Lee [So./Medfield MA] scored 13 points and added six rebounds. Megan Barry [Fr./Plainville MA], co-rookie of the week in the conference, had another double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. She also contributed six blocked shots.

Heather Clark [So./Henniker NH] and Kara Cicchiello [So./Stafford CT] paced the Bison with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Salve Regina (8-1; 3-0 CCC) extends its home winning streak to 18 games. Nichols (3-6; 0-3 CCC) was the last conference team to defeat the Seahawks at the Rodgers Recreation Center (February 2002).
