Sophomore forward Tyler Rhoten (Ridgewood, N.J.) totaled a game-high 24 points and added eight rebounds to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 80-65 win over the visiting State University of New York-Old Westbury Panthers in the men’s basketball action this evening at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity, ranked No. 14 in the nation, improves to 12-0, while the Panthers drop to 6-5 with their fourth straight loss.
Trinity raced out to a 13-2 lead over the first five minutes and maintained a comfortable advantage of six points or more for the remainder of the contest. The Bantams shot 57.1 percent from the floor (17-26) and outrebounded the Panthers, 38-27. Bantam senior tri-captain guard Shaun Smyth (Manchester, Conn.) made six out seven shots from the field, all three of his three-point attempts, and all six of his foul shots for a total of 21 points. He also had four rebounds, four assists, and a pair of blocked shots. Trinity junior center Craig Coupe (Niskayuna, N.Y.) added 12 points and 10 boards.
Freshman center Carl Gervais (Bronx, N.Y.) paced Old Westbury with 14 points and added four rebounds, and three steals, while junior forward Chris Roberts (New York, N.Y.) notched 13 points off the bench, and sophomore forward Jarrod Weir (Elmont, N.Y.) contributed 10 points
