FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The top-seeded Mary Washington College men's basketball team defeated fifth-seeded York College of PA, 68-64, in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals on Thursday night at Goolrick Gymnasium. The Eagles trailed by as many as five points with 4:47 remaining, but went on a 9-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Erik Rodriguez with 1:57 remaining. MWC then lost senior point guard Evan Fowler, who fouled out with the Eagles up three with 1:36 left. But the Eagles got free throws from Jon Hurd, Mike Lee, and Rodriguez in the closing minute to hold on for the four-point win.
Early in the game, Fowler, who last week became the Capital Athletic Conference's all-time leader in assists, broke the MWC school record for streals, with his 207th, breaking the record held by Buddy Hawley.
Lee led MWC with 18 points, while Fowler added 12 points, and Jon Hurd added eleven points and eleven rebounds.
The Eagles won the game despite shooting just 37.5% from the floor, while York shot 50.9%, including a blistering 56% in the second half. Mary washington will now host either Goucher College or Catholic University on Saturday in the CAC Championship. The tenative tipoff time is 1 pm.
