Catholic 62, Goucher 51

WASHINGTON — Catholic advanced to its third straight Capital Athletic Conference Championship game with its 62-51 win over Goucher Thursday night at the DuFour Center in semifinal action.

With the win, the second-seeded Cardinals will play at the top-seeded Eagles of Mary Washington this Saturday in the 2004 CAC Tournament Championship with a time to be determined.

The Cardinals put the game away courtesy of a late 13-5 run capped off by a big three-pointer by sophomore Matt Tanner with 1:58 in the game, giving the Cardinals a 57-47 cushion.

Tanner finished with 11 points off the bench including three key buckets from downtown. Senior William Morley and freshman Patrick Dwyer each scored 14 points to lead CUA.

Catholic had their biggest lead of the first half when senior Blair Mills drained the first of his three treys on the evening to give the Cardinals an 18-7 lead with just over eight minutes in the period. But the Gophers would outscore CUA 15-9 the rest of the way to trail 27-22 at the break.

Jonathan Garritt then gave Goucher its first lead of the second half with his putback inside to make it a 37-36 game with 11 minutes to play.

The Cardinals would find themselves down 42-38 before rallying to take the lead for good. Sophomore Patrick Satalin nailed a clutch three to cap a 5-0 run and lead 43-42 with 7:52 on the clock.

Mills totaled 13 points while Dwyer added a team-high 10 boards for his first double-double of the season.

Pierre Jones had 13 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs, and Trevor Quinn added 10 points and seven boards for the Gophers (13-13).

Catholic shot just 20-of-50 (40%) for the game but were 11-of-22 shooting in the second half. The Gophers didn't fare much better, going just 18-for-61 (29%) from the floor.

Also with the win, the senior class reached the 100 win mark for their careers. Morley, Mills, and Adam Dickman stand with an all-time mark of 100-18
