Mitchell, who had a game-high 20 points on the night, becomes the 26th player in school history to reach the 1000-point plateau, and just the third Scot under 6’0" tall to accomplish the milestone. The 5-10 senior shooting guard did it after making a steal in the Kenyon backcourt and moments later drilling a three-pointer from the right wing at the 6:52 mark of the second half. He then exited to a standing ovation.
Wooster (22-3), the No. 2 seed, advances to play third-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University (19-7) in the semifinal round, which will be hosted by No. 1 seed Wittenberg University (23-3), on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the Scots ended the opening half with a flurry and then rolled to the 38-point victory.
Seventh-seeded Kenyon, which saw its season close at 9-17, hung around for most of the first half, closing what was once a 12-point gap (21-9) down to 21-16 after Matt Formato hit three-straight jumpers, one a three-pointer. Following a timeout, though, Wooster scored nine unanswered points, capped by a Tom Port three-pointer, and ended the half on a 16-4 run to go in up 37-20
The Lords scored the first five points of the second half only to see the Scots respond with the next 18, and it then became a coronation for Mitchell’s career. To go with 1,000 points, Mitchell also recently became the fifth player in school history to dish over 300 assists (302), and he has 121 steals, which ranks him seventh at Wooster in that category. Mitchell played in his 111th career game Tuesday night.
Three other Scots joined Mitchell in double figures, including Port, who had 15 points, four of which came via dunks, and a team-high five assists. Ryan Snyder, chipped in 13 points for the second-straight game, while Blake Mealer produced a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds, marking a career-high for him on the glass.
Also on the boards, Tim Vandervaart grabbed a career-high 10 in just nine minutes of action to help Wooster to a commanding 58-23 advantage for the game.
The Scots also made 50 percent of their field-goal attempts (33-of-66), while holding Kenyon to around 25 percent (15-of-58).
Formato paced the Lords with 18 points and five assists.
Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster will play in Springfield, Ohio, on Thursday, with the opening tip set for 5:30 p.m., while Wittenberg and Wabash College (12-14) will take the floor in the other semi at approximately 7:45 p.m. The winners will meet in the NCAC Tournament championship on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
