Waynesburg 65, Thiel 62

WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Beau Wilson extended Waynesburg’s season and kept its conference title hopes alive by draining a three-pointer with two seconds remaining in the Yellow Jackets’ thrilling 65-62 win over visiting Thiel College Tuesday night in men’s basketball action. With the win, the Jackets advance to the semifinal round of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament to face No. 1-seeded Westminster on the road Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Wilson knocked the three-pointer after dribbling the length of the floor after the Tomcats’ Daryl Moore made two foul shots to tie the game with eight seconds left. The freshmen point guard scored 15 points, including 3 of 4 from three-point range and 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Waynesburg (11-15) took an early 16-5 in the opening six minutes of action, but Thiel came back to take a three-point lead with two minutes left in the first half and led 29-28 at the half.

In the second half, the Tomcats (9-17) led by as much as nine points (43-34 with 11:52 remaining), but the Jackets went on a 12-4 run highlighted by a pair of three-pointers by junior guard Nick Tomsko. Tomsko, who played 24 minutes off the bench, led all scorers with 16 points.

Freshman guard Jeff Nero buried a three-pointer with 6:25 to tie the game, 50-50, for the first time in the second half. Waynesburg led by as many as four points down the stretch, before Moore hit a jumper with 1:27 remaining to put Thiel up, 60-28.

Wilson then took over. After he sank two foul shots with 1:14 remaining, Wilson defended Henry Passerello’s forced jumper and pulled down the rebound with 48 seconds left. Tomsko’s lay-up put Waynesburg up 62-60 27 seconds later before Moore’s game-tying free throws.

Stephen Laird led Thiel with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Moore finished with 15 points. Waynesburg’s Phil McLaughlin was the third Jacket to score in double figures with 11 points to go with his team-high nine rebounds.
