Washington College 97, McDaniel 89

Westminster, MD — It was a game of big momentum swings, and the final swing went in Washington’s favor as the Shoremen knocked off McDaniel College 97-89 at the Gill Center on Tuesday evening.

Jonathan Webb (Milford, DE / Milford) opened the scoring with an early lay-up sparking a 21-10 Washington run in the opening five minutes of the game. Webb, who scored a game-high 28 points, accounted for eight points in the early boost, and hit 12 of 17 shots from the field in the game.

All five of Washington’s starters scored in double-figures, including David Horvath (Mastic, NY / William Floyd), who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. McDaniel was led offensively by senior Alan Hoyt (Lexington Park, MD / Great Mills), who recorded the final double-double of his career with a 17-point, ten rebound effort. Chris Rutland (Severna Park, MD / Spalding) went eight of 11 from the line and four of nine from the field for a career high, 16 points.

While Washington had opened a big lead, McDaniel was intent on showing no lead was safe on Tuesday. The hot-handed Shoremen watched their early 11 point lead slip away as the Green Terror responded with a 25-0 run over the next ten minutes to give the Terror a 36-21 lead with less than six minutes remaining in the half.

McDaniel stretched that lead to as many as 17 points with four minutes showing in the first period before the Shoremen regrouped. Washington closed the half with a 12-2 run which included a seven-of-seven effort at the charity stripe, and had cut McDaniel’s lead down to seven points heading into the locker rooms.

The teams played even basketball for the first eight minutes of the second half before Washington went to work on a ten-point McDaniel advantage. A Dustin Abbate (Oyster Bay, NY / Oyster Bay) jumped kicked off an 18-8 Shoremen run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to draw even at 74 aside.

Washington did not reclaim the lead until Webb got hacked on a lay-up with 4:52 left in the game. The shot went in. Webb sunk the extra shot to finish the three-point-play, as well as the Green Terror. McDaniel got as close as one, but a Webb jumper, followed by a missed McDaniel lay-up and an Abbate three-pointer stretched the lead back to six. Washington sank six free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the win.

With the loss, McDaniel closes the season at 6-19, 3-15, while Washington improves to 10-15, 7-11.
