Texas Lutheran 64, Mary Hardin-Baylor 63

SEGUIN, Texas — Nik Summers did it again to the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders.

Summers, Texas Lutheran’s shooting guard, hit a 3-pointer with .72 seconds on the clock to give the Bulldogs a 64-63 win Saturday afternoon at TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Jason Morales (El Paso/Montwood) tipped away the final inbounds pass to secure the Texas Lutheran win.

Summers nailed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer on Jan. 24 that beat Mary Hardin-Baylor 73-70.

On Saturday, Summers finished with a game-high 21 points. He hit four 3-pointers and registered three assists.

Texas Lutheran rallied from a five-point deficit in the final two minutes.

Texas Lutheran concludes the season with a 17-8 overall record and a 9-5 mark in the American Southwest Conference West Division. TLU finishes alone in third place in the ASC West.

Mary Hardin-Baylor, which has already clinched a ASC Championship Tournament berth, fell to 18-7 overall and to 10-4 in the ASC West.

The Crusaders would have won the ASC West and hosted the ASC Championship Tournament with a win over Texas Lutheran or a Sul Ross State loss at McMurry. But UMHB lost in Seguin, and Sul Ross won in McMurry. Sul Ross won its second consecutive ASC West crown and will host the ASC Championship Tournament in Alpine.

TLU’s Tommy Stolhandske, with his broken right hand in a splint, grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds and scored 17 points. Jerrod Carpenter was the only other Bulldogs in double figures. He had 11 points.

Matt Nelson added nine points and five rebounds.

Justin Hejl led the Crusaders with 20 points and nine rebounds. Hejl had 14 points at the half.

UMHB’s Brandon Gatlin added 14 points and seven assists, and Michael Blaylock recorded 13 points.
