Elizabethtown 85, Moravian 77

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Junior guard Kyle Conrad had a game high 26 points to lead the Elizabethtown College men’s basketball team to an 85-77 victory over Moravian College in Commonwealth Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays improve to 16-8 overall and 8-6 in the Commonwealth. Elizabethtown clinched the third spot in the Commonwealth Tournament with losses by Susquehanna University and Lebanon Valley College. The loss was the fourth straight for the Greyhounds, who finish the season at 10-15 overall and 2-12 in the Commonwealth Conference.

Moravian led by as many as seven points at 23-16 with 10:51 remaining in the first half but the Blue Jays would come back to force a 46-46 tie at the intermission. The Greyhounds took a 53-48 lead with 17:31 remaining in the game before Elizabethtown went on a 12-0 run to take control of the contest. Moravian would pull within one point at 74-73 on a three-pointer by senior guard Steve Weiler with 2:21 remaining, however, Elizabethtown finished the contest with an 11-4 run including a five-for-five performance at the foul line.

For the game, Moravian made 25 of 66 field goal attempts (44.6 percent) six of 22 three-point field goals (27.3 percent) and 21 of 24 free throws (87.5 percent). The Blue Jays made 27 of 56 field goals (48.2 percent), seven of 17 three-pointers (41.2 percent) and 24 of 32 free throws (75.0 percent) in the game. Elizabethtown also had a 34-33 advantage on the boards and forced Moravian in 20 turnovers while committing just 16 turnovers.

Conrad, who was six of 11 from the floor, two of five on three-pointers and 12 of 13 at the foul line, also had two assists and two rebounds. Junior guard Jon Connor contributed 17 points and three assists while junior forward had 15 points and a game high eight rebounds as a reserve.

Senior center Ian Daecher had eight points and four boards while junior guard Ben Tannous added eight points in the victory. Senior guard Jim Barron had four points and three boards while junior forward/center Dan Keane added four rebounds and three points for the Blue Jays.

The Greyhounds had three players in double figures led by Weiler with 19 points. Weiler finishes his career with 976 points and second in school history with 147 three-pointers. Senior guard Kevin Wyers netted 18 points in his final game in a Moravian uniform, and he added five rebounds and three assists.

Junior forward Brandon Zaleski had 16 points and six boards to close out his junior year with career totals of 1,461 points (5th in school history) and 546 rebounds. Sophomore forward Zach Zsilavecz added seven points and three rebounds while sophomore forward Steve Wenderfer had six boards. Senior guard Lucas Malishchak had three assists, two rebounds and two points in his final game while senior guard Kevin Burke contributed two points and two assists.
