Sul Ross State 105, McMurry 99

ABILENE, Texas (Feb. 21) - — McMurry had all five starters in double figures but it wasn't enough in a 105-99 loss at the hands of visiting Sul Ross State on Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena. The Lobos' victory, coupled with Mary Hardin-Baylor's 64-63 loss today at Texas Lutheran on a 3-pointer in the final seconds, clinched their second straight American Southwest Conference West Division title and now they will host the ASC Tournament next weekend in Alpine. SRSU improved to 17-8 overall and 11-3 in the ASC West, finishing one-game ahead of UMHB.

The Lobos had their perimeter game going on all cylinders, making 11 of 26 3-pointers for 42.3 percent. Larry Morales led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Rick Herrera came off the bench to contribute 17 points, including three treys, in 21 minutes.

Michael Qualls led McMurry with 17 points, followed by Juan Muniz and Heath Hardin wtih 16 apiece, J.R. Williams had 15 and Kendrick Ellis, 11.

The Indians wrapped up their season with a 15-10 record, including an 8-6 ASC-West mark. Seniors Ellis, Muniz, Hardin and Quentin Lankford made their final appearance in the Maroon and White.

Sul Ross State jumped out to a 20-10 lead with 14 minutes and 15 seconds remaining in the first half. McMurry then cut the deficit to 35-34 at the 7:38 mark before the Lobos responded with another run to go up by nine points with 5:59 left. The Indians, however, eventually took their first lead of the game at 49-47 on Muniz' jumper two minutes later. Sul Ross led 56-55 at halftime.

In the second half, McMurry led by as many as seven points but couldn't withstand the Lobos' full-court pressure. After Hardin tied the game for the Indians at 87-87, Sul Ross went ahead for good on a 3-pointer by Morales at the 4:06 mark and the team sealed the win by making 8 of 11 free throws down the stretch. Morales punctuated the win with a dunk at the buzzer.
