Ben Van Thorre had 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to lead Macalester (17-8, 16-4 MIAC) past visiting St. John's 86-70 Saturday afternoon. After shooting just 36% in the first half, the Scots went 15-for-25 (60%) from the field and scored 53 points in the second period to turn a close game into a 16-point victory.
The Scots led 58-52 with 8:47 to go before staging a key 16-8 run to increase the margin to 14 points at 74-60 with 4:05 left.
Van Thorre was joined in double figures by Chris Assel and Will Moeller with 12 points each, and Brendan Bosman with 10. Adam Denny had nine points and eight rebounds.
Paul Henrichs had 33 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Johnnies (8-17, 6-14 MIAC). Matt Ohme added 11 points and Pat McKenzie dished out five assists.
