Doylestown, Pa. — ROYALS END SEASON ON A POSITIVE NOTE, DEFEAT DELAWARE VALLEY, 100-97, BEHIND 32-POINT, 12-REBOUND EFFORT BY O’DONNELL

Doylestown, Pa.—Junior forward Brian O’Donnell made sure The University of Scranton ended a losing season on a positive note.

O’Donnell connected on 10 of 17 shots from the field to score a career-high 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Royals defeated Delaware Valley, 100-97, in the season-finale for both teams Saturday afternoon. Sophomore guards Matt Snyder and Nick Alfier and freshman guard Sean Clark had 12 points apiece and freshman guard Mike McGowan chipped in 11 as Scranton snapped a three-game losing streak to end the season with a 5-20 overall record and a 3-11 mark in the Freedom Conference. Mike Thornton scored a game and career-high 34 points for the Aggies, now 4-20 overall and 3-11 in the league.

Delaware Valley, which trailed 46-40 at intermission, made a late surge to try to pull out the win. The Aggies cut Scranton’s lead to one, 98-97, with 3.7 seconds remaining on a layup by Isaiah Pinckney, but were assessed a technical foul for calling a timeout without any left. Royal sophomore guard Michael Riccobono (Chester, N.J./Mendham) canned two free throws to set the final score.

O’Donnell’s 32-point eclipses his previous high of 31 against FDU-Florham on January 31, at the Long Center and gives him 1,063 for his career, which is now 30th on the Scranton all-time list. His 12 rebounds gives him 210 for the season, which is the third straight year that he has pulled down 200-or-rebounds. He is one rebound shy of tying his cousin, Kevin Courtney (697 rebounds, 1997-2001), for 10th place on the Royals’ all-time list.
