Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (February 20, 2004) – Senior center Ryan Freundlich (Springfield, N.J.) tallied 20 points and seven rebounds to lead Union College to a 65-59 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball victory over Vassar College Friday evening at the Athletic and Fitness Center.
Trailing 56-55 with 6:12 remaining, Union (18-6, 8-5 UCAA) got a lay-up from Freundlich, a three-point basket from sophomore forward Brian Scordato (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) and made five free throws down the stretch for the win.
Sophomore guard Will Byrne (Chelmsford, Mass.) was a catalyst for Vassar (5-19, 1-12 UCAA) in the second half netting eight of his career-high 13 points in the period. Junior guard Seth Taft (Philadelphia, Penn.) led the Brewers with 15 points off the bench. Junior guard Jud Winton (San Francisco, Calif.) chipped in eight points, while freshman center Will Kieffer (Chappaqua, N.Y.) tacked on six points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore guard John Cagianello (Wethersfield, Conn.) had 13 of his 19 points in the first half. Junior forward Devon Bruce (Altamont, N.Y.) added a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds for the Dutchmen.
Vassar wraps up its season with a 4 p.m. contest against Skidmore College tomorrow at the Athletic and Fitness Center. The game will be the last for seniors Ryan Callery and Dan Trigub.
