NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Westminster drilled a school-record 25 three-pointers and clinched a first-round bye in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Tournament following a 102-74 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday evening at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster junior forward Pat O’Connor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) scored the first eight Titan points as WC pushed ahead to an 8-2 lead, but the Presidents countered with a 12-0 run to take a 14-8 advantage.

The Titans hit six triples over the next five minutes to assume a 28-20 lead with eight minutes remaining in the half. Sophomore guard Mark DeMonaco (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) then buried four triples over the final six minutes of the half to push the WC lead to 48-27 at intermission.

The Titans (12-12, 7-2 PAC) shot 41 percent (18-for-44) in the first half and knocked down 12-of-36 three-point attempts.

W&J scored the first six points of the second half and closed the gap to 52-41 with 16 minutes left after a trey by freshman guard Jon Koch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum), but O’Connor drilled a three-pointer on WC’s next possession for a 55-41 lead.

O’Connor and junior guard Ed Pagley (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) both canned a pair of triples over the next three minutes to stretch the WC lead to 66-46. O’Connor then spotted up for the Titans’ 20th three in the first 29:26 for a 75-50 lead. The Titans led by as many as 32 points in the final 10 minutes.

DeMonaco scored a game-high 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting from beyond the arc, while O’Connor and Pagley added 17 and 12, respectively. The Titans, who held a 49-44 rebounding edge, connected on 25-of-72 three-point attempts.

Junior forward Steve Button (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) scored a team-high 12 points for W&J, while freshman forward Matt Vorndran (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) was the only other President in double figures with 10.
