WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Waynesburg lost a pivotal Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) men’s basketball game Wednesday night as third-place Grove City handed the fourth-place Yellow Jackets a 70-58 loss at the Marisa Fieldhouse. Grove City (12-12, 6-3 PAC) had two players post double-doubles, including Tanner Prosser with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds and Matt Phillips with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Wolverines shot a solid 50 percent (31 of 62) from the field, including 54 percent in the first half.
Waynesburg (9-15, 3-6 PAC) trailed the final 28 minutes of the game, after Mike King scored with just under eight minutes to go in the first half to give the Yellow Jackets their final lead of the game at 19-18. King netted 10 points and moved into 25th place for all-time career scoring in school history with 1,094.
Freshman guard Jeff Nero led Waynesburg with 14 points and three assists. He knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:10 remaining in the first half to cut Grove City’s led the three points.
Grove City wasted no time gaining a comfortable second-half led. After leading by seven points at halftime, the Wolverines stormed to its largest lead of the game with a 19-point advantage (53-34) by the 11-minute mark.
Other notables for Waynesburg included freshman point guard Beau Wilson rounding out three Jackets in double figures with 10 points, while junior center Phil McLaughlin snared 10 rebounds to go with his six points.
Waynesburg needs a win Saturday over Thiel (7:30 p.m. at Waynesburg) to secure a home game in the first round of the PAC Tournament, which tips off on Tuesday.
