St. Olaf 64, St. Thomas 61
Senior Matt Schlenker scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the second half, including a steal and layup with :04 left to ice the game, as visiting St. Olaf
scored a 64-61 win over St. Thomas in MIAC men’s basketball play Wednesday at UST’s Schoenecker Arena.
Neal Anderson had a game-high 23 points including six 3-point baskets, for the Tommies (11-13 overall, 9-10 MIAC). Nick Schader had 15 points and Joey Shimek had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Trailing 60-59, St. Thomas missed two shots with a chance to take the lead with 45 seconds left. They also missed a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left that would have tied the game.
Ted Gonsior and Nate Lund each had 10 points for St. Olaf (9-15, 6-13), which never trailed as it broke to leads of 8-0 and 34-16. The Oles shot 56% in the first half and led 44-30 at halftime. They still led 53-37 with 12:00 left, but Anderson made three 3-pointers to lead a 22-7 run that pulled UST within 60-59.
Gonsior made two free throws with 27 seconds left for a three-point lead. He missed a one-and-one chance with :09 left and the Toms rebounded, but Schlenker stole the ball and made a layup for a five-point lead.
St. Thomas is locked into the No. 6 seed for next week’s MIAC playoffs, while St. Olaf could move as high as seventh place in the final conference standings
with a home win Saturday vs. Hamline.
