WILKES-BARRE, Pa.—A 20-3 spurt early in the second half sparked King’s College to an 82-56 victory over The University of Scranton in Freedom Conference action Tuesday evening at the Scandlon Gymnasium.
The Royals trailed by only two, 36-34, with 16:07 remaining before King’s guard Brian Horgan, who finished with a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds, sparked the key rally by scoring seven points during an 8-minute span as the Monarchs improved to 19-5 overall and 10-3 in the Freedom Conference. Junior forward Brian O’Donnell led the Royals, now 4-20 overall and 2-11 in league play, with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Matt Snyder added 12 points for Scranton, which connected on only 18 of 54 field goal attempts (33.3 percent) and was out-rebounded by a 44-32 margin.
Britt Moore added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Monarchs, who overcame a 12-for-30 shooting performance in the first half by connecting on 16 of 30 shots (53.3 percent) from the field after intermission. King’s, which knocked down 21 of 26 free throw attempts (80.8 percent), also received 11 points and six rebounds from Jonathan Veet and 10 points and eight rebounds from Marty O’Hora.
O’Donnell’s ‘double-double’ in points and rebounds was his 10th of the season and the 27th of his career. He needs two rebounds in Saturday’s season-finale at Delaware Valley to reach 200 for the third consecutive year. In tonight’s game, O’Donnell passed Chris Haray (677 rebounds, 1988-1991) for 11th place on the Scranton all-time list, and is now only 14 shy of passing his cousin, Kevin Courtney (697 rebounds, 1997-2001), for 10th place.
