NEWPORT NEWS, VA — MEN’S BASKETBALL POWERS PAST AVERETT 97-54

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – CNU’s men’s basketball team won its fourth game in a row with a 97-54 win over Averett on Tuesday evening.
The Captains got off to a great start as they never trailed and took a 60-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
CNU was very effective from the field in the first half as they finished 22-of-35 (63%) from the field, 7-of-14 (50%) on three-point attempts and 9-of-15 (60%) from the free throw line. The Cougars had a sub-par half shooting 8-of-27 (30%) from the field, 1-of-9 (11%) on three’s and 6-of-9 (67%) from the charity stripe.
The second half was much of the same for both squads as it was in the first half.
The Captains connected on 42% of their shots from the field, 67% on three’s and 83% from the free throw line. Averett finished the second half 33% from the floor, 22% on three’s and 83% from the charity stripe.
For the game, the Cougars finished 20-of-63 (32%) from the field, 3-of-18 (17%) on three’s and 11-of-15 (73%) from the free throw line. CNU finished 36-of-68 (53%) from the field, 11-of-20 (55%) on three’s and 14-of-21 (68%) from the charity stripe.
AU was led by Jerrod Harris with 20 points and Andrew Gore added 11 points.
The Captains were led by a career high 19 points and nine rebounds from Dont’a Selden. Blake Brookman finished with 19 points and six assists, Otho Hampton added 18 points and a game high 12 rebounds and Jeremy Romeo finished with 11 and Mark Hepner added 10 points.
Averett is now 0-22 overall and 0-12 in the USA South. The Captains are now 14-9 overall and 8-4 in the USA South.
CNU returns to action this weekend as they host Greensboro Saturday with tip-off set for 4 pm.
