Cabrini vs. Waynesburg Nov 29
A pair of NCAA Division III single-game records - for combined three-pointers made, and three-point attempts in a game - fell by the wayside today, and Waynesburg and Westminster combined for 36 three-pointers (22 for Westminster, 14 for Waynesburg) and 103 three-point attempts (77 by Westminster, 26 by Waynesburg) in Waynesburg's 94-88 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road victory in New Wilmington. The Jackets improved to 9-14 overal and 3-5 in PAC play. The Titans, which entered the game tied for first in the PAC, dropped their second straight game and third in the last four games to fall to 11-12, 6-2 PAC.
Prior to the Westminster-Waynesburg game, the NCAA Division III record for combined three-point field goals made in a game was 35, done on three occasions (last in 1995), while the record for combined three-point attempts in a game was 97, set by Grinnell (79) and Colorado College (18) on Nov. 17, 1995.
Westminster controlled the pace early leading by as many as eight points on three occasions, the last at 32-24 with 7:55 left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets then took their first lead by going on an 11-0 run to take a 35-342 advantage en route to a 50-44 halftime lead. Westminster quickly fought back early in the second half and the two teams exchanged the lead for much of the period. The Titans appeared to take command with a seven-point lead (86-79) with 6:27 left, only to see Waynesburg outscore Westminster 15-2 the rest of the way.
Mike King paced five Waynesburg double-digit scorers with 24 points. For the Titans, junior guard Ed Pagley (New Castle/New Castle H.S.) (right) led the way with a game and season-high 26 points before leaving the game in the final minutes due to injury. Pagley was 8-of-17 from three-point range in the loss. Other scorers in double figures for Westminster included sophomore guard Mark DeMonaco (New Castle/New Castle H.S.) with 20 points on six three-pointers; junior guard Chris Hatch (Canfield, OH/South Range H.S.) with 13 and junior forward Pat O'Connor (Pittsburgh/Keystone Oaks H.S.) with 11. Westminster connected on 22-of-77 three-point attempts as a team, one shy of the school-record (23, set at Waynesburg on Jan. 24).
The Titan cagers play their final regular season home game this Wednesday, Feb. 18, as Westminster hosts PAC rival Washington & Jefferson College at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium at 8 p.m.
