St. Thomas 77, Carleton 58

ST. PAUL — Junior Kristi Huegel scored 20 points and host St. Thomas shot 54% from the field in Saturday's 77-58 upset of No. 9-ranked Carleton in MIAC women's basketball play at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

Soph Erica Opdahl had 16 points and seven rebounds and freshman Nikki Zappa had 12 points for the Tommies (12-11 overall, 11-9 MIAC), who halted the Knights' nine-game winning streak and ended a five-game skid vs. Carleton. Vel Williams added seven points and seven assists and the Toms made 20-of-24 at the foul line.

St. Thomas clinched the school's 18th consecutive postseason berth. It has a two-game lead over seventh-place Bethel and owns the tie-breaker with its win over first-place Carleton.

Megan Vig had 18 points and Linnea Engel scored 10 for Carleton (21-2, 18-2), which was playing without injured starter Kristi Colbenson. The Knights had 18 turnovers and were outrebounded 32-25.

Carletn remains in a tie for the MIAC lead at 18-2 with two games to play as co-leader St. Ben's lost 72-60 at Gustavus.

The Knights jumped to leads of 9-0 and 20-9, but a 20-8 Tommie run put the hosts ahead 29-28 at halftime. St. Thomas made 10 consecutive baskets in the second half during a 21-3 run that built a 24-point lead.

St. Thomas is now 8-0 this season when it scores 70 points.
