PROVIDENCE, R.I. –Senior Rohan Russell (Providence, R.I.) scored a career-high 44 points to become Johnson & Wales all-time leading scorer in the Wildcats 107-76 victory against Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. Russell now has 1,179 career points in just two seasons, eclipsing the previous mark of 1,169 set by Anthony Williams from 1995-1999.

Johnson & Wales junior Sam Tamargo (Los Angeles, Calif.) registered a double with 11 points and 10 assists while sophomore Brian Fernandes (Fall River, Calif.) added 22 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. Junior Wascar Viscaino (Providence, R.I.) narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench for the Wildcats. Leading the way for Albertus Magnus was freshman Chris Keslow (Torrington, Conn.) who registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while senior Curtis Miller (New Haven, Conn.) added 17 points, four rebounds and five assists in the setback for the Falcons.

The two teams traded baskets early with JWU holding a 20-18 lead with 13:08 left in the half. The Wildcats then used a 12-4 run, taking their first double-digit lead after a free throw from senior Chris Anderson (Wentzville, Mo.) with 7:27 left in the half. Johnson & Wales held a nine point lead at 38-29 before closing out the half on a 16-6 run to take the 54-35 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Johnson & Wales continued to build on its lead early in the second half, taking a 30-point lead (74-44) after a three-pointer from Russell with 14:05 left in the game. Russell then scored five straight before nailing a three-pointer with 10:41 left in the game to become the school’s all-time leading scorer. The Wildcats lead grew to as many as 41 late in the game before taking the 107-76 victory.

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 16-7 for the season, 13-3 in the GNAC while Albertus Magnus falls to 3-19, 3-13 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, February 19h when they host Western New England in a GNAC matchup at 7:00 p.m.
