Cortland State 80, New Paltz State 51

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Cortland broke open a close game with an incredible 29-0 run over an eight-minute span late in the first half and the Red Dragons (15-7, 7-6 SUNYAC) defeated New Paltz (5-16, 3-10) at Corey Gymnasium. Cortland's win spoiled the return of former Red Dragon assistant coach and Cortland alumnus Doug Pasquerella, now in his second year as New Paltz's head coach. New Paltz did not play at Cortland in Pasquerella's debut season last winter. Pasquerella is now 0-3 against former mentor Tom Spanbauer.

Cortland's lead was 14-12 after New Paltz hit a shot with 9:39 left in the first half. From that point, the Red Dragons made 10 of their next 14 shots, including 6-of-7 three-pointers, and led 43-12 with 1:53 remaining. New Paltz broke the run on a basket off an offensive rebound by Peter Ferenz with 1:32 left in the half. During the run, New Paltz was 0-for-14 from the floor with three turnovers before Ferenz's basket.

Sophomore Brian Kirchhoff started and ended the run with three-pointers and hit three treys in all during the stretch. Also in the run, freshman Dave Jutton made a pair of three-pointers and junior Justin O'Garrow scored seven straight points. New Paltz trailed 45-16 at halftime, but fought back to within 19 points with 12:47 left on John Hauser's three-pointer. Cortland, however, extended its lead to 26 points over the next two minutes and led by as many as 32 points late in the game.

Sophomore Jon Rother led Cortland with 21 points. He made two three-pointers and 7-of-8 free throws. O'Garrow finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, five steals and three blocked shots. Sophomore Frank Ranieri added 12 points (4-of-5 shooting), six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Kirchhoff and Jutton each made 3-of-6 three-pointers to finish with nine points apiece.

Hauser led New Paltz with 15 points and four steals. Matt Irwin scored 10 points and Jayvard Smith recorded six rebounds and four assists.
