Concordia-Moorhead 87, Hamline 47

Moorhead, Minn. — Josh Downey poured in a career-high 32 points and Concordia breezed past Hamline 87-47. The 40-point margin of victory is the largest this season and largest since January 16,1995, when the Cobbers beat St. Mary's by 45. With the win, Concordia clinches a home playoff game when the MIAC playoffs begin later this month. Concordia can finish as high as second and no worse than fourth place.

The Cobbers up their conference record to 14-5 and overall mark to 17-6. It is the most wins for a Cobber team since the 1995-96 season when the Cobbers went 16-4 in league play, 21-6 overall and won the MIAC playoff championship. The Pipers lose for the 12th consecutive game and fall to 3-15 in the MIAC and 6-17 overall.

Downey went 13-for-16 (81.2%) from the field and 6-for-7 (85.7%) from 3-point range, as he scored 30 or more
points for the second time this season. Soren Nelson scored
16 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Keith Eckhoff also added 16 points to pace the Cobbers. The biggest statistic of the game for Concordia was from the free throw line where the Cobbers only shot 65.2% (15-for-23). It marks the first time in nine games that they have shot 60% from the foul line.

Brandon Aukes had 14 points to lead the Pipers. Travis Jacobs was the only other Hamline player to finish in
double digits. He added 10 points. Josh Hanson, who entered the game fourth in the league in scoring with a 17.0 points per game average, was held to only seven points on 2-of-9 shooting from the floor.

Concordia bolted to a 5-0 lead out of the game, built the lead to 9-2 and never looked back. The Cobbers used a
12-0 run in the early stages of the game to push the margin to 12 at 18-6. They used a second 12-0 run midway through the period to increase the lead to 37-16. Concordia cooled off later in the opening period and went into the break with a 47-27 lead.

The second half was more of the same for Concordia, as they were able to put down their open jump shots and cut open the Hamline interior defense. Downey single-handedly built the Cobber lead to 24 when he hit two straight 3-point attempts within the first three minutes of the half. Concordia put the game way out of reach when they went on a 23-3 run from the 14-minute mark until just under five
minutes to go in the game.

Head Coach Duane Siverson was able to play all 12 rostered players in the final three minutes of the game. Wes Bacchus scored four points in the final five minutes of the game to help Concordia coast to the 40-point victory.

Concordia will end the regular season by hosting Augsburg on Wednesday, February 18 at 7:30pm. The game can be heard live on KVOX 1280AM in the Fargo-Moorhead area and worldwide over the internet at www.gocobbers.com.
