Brandon Parrish (FR, Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) led all players with 20 points and broke the sixth deadlock of the second half, 63-63, by draining the clinching free throws with 19 seconds left. Colby-Sawyer (15-6, 11-2 CCC) had one chance to win the contest, and two more to tie it, but missed three shots on its final possession and was forced to foul Marco Barrera (SR, Central Falls, RI/Central Falls HS) who sealed the win for Roger Williams (14-8, 8-5 CCC) with a pair of makes from the line.
Trailing 14-6 in the early going, the Chargers went on a 12-0 run to pull ahead by four midway through the period. The Hawks reclaimed the advantage, 23-22, with just over six minutes remaining and brought a 29-28 edge into the break.
After trading the lead several times in the first six minutes of the second half, Roger Williams produced 12 straight points to go up by 10 (53-43). Colby-Sawyer chipped away at the deficit and took a 61-59 lead when Andrew St. Clair (SO, Pittsfield, ME/Maine Central Institute) received a lengthy pass from Collin Bray (SO, Brookline, MA/New Hampton (NH) Prep) and converted a layup with just under two minutes on the clock.
The Hawks’ Chris Cormier (SO, Trumbull, CT/Trumbull HS) knotted the score for the fifth time in the final 20 minutes, 61-61, by hitting two free throws, and the Chargers took their last lead, and scored their final points, when Tyler Putnam (SO, Hodgdon, ME)/Hodgdon HS) drove through the lane for a layup. Brian Scharrenweber (JR, Newburyport, MA/Newburyport HS) began his squad’s day-ending 6-0 run by scoring a basket off a feed from Parrish.
Scharrenweber scored 14 points and Barrera grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the win. Colby-Sawyer connected on 18-of-21 free throws (.857) but was just 21-for-59 (.356) from the floor. St. Clair paced the Chargers with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Chris Condon (JR, Reading, MA/Reading Memorial HS) and Bray had 18 and 10 points, respectively.
