NEWPORT NEWS, VA – CNU’s men’s basketball team erased an eight point halftime deficit to defeat the visiting Ferrum Panthers 75-60 Saturday evening in the Freeman Center.
Both team shot extremely well in the first half as the Panthers scampered out to a 40-32 halftime lead. FC was 16-of-31 (52%) from the field, 3-of-8 (38%) on three-point attempts and 5-of-6 (83%) from the free throw line. The Captains were just as effective from the field shooting 13-of-29 (45%) from the floor, 1-of-7 (14%) on three’s and 5-of-7 (71%) from the charity stripe. The Panthers were led by Kevin Aigbe with 15 points and Kendrick Holley with 14 points through the first period.
The second half was a completely different story for Ferrum as they couldn’t buy a basket shooting 6-of-26 (23%) from the floor, 0-of-11 on three’s and 8-of-13 (62%) from the free throw line. CNU faired much better from the field in the second half finishing 12-of-25 (48%) from the floor, 1-of-3 (33%) on three’s and 18-of-24 (75%) from the free throw line.
For the game, the Panthers finished shooting 39% from the field, 16% on three’s and 68% from the free throw line. The Captains finished shooting 46% from the floor, 20% on three’s and 74% from the charity stripe.
Ferrum was led by Aigbe with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Holley finished with 17 points.
The Captains were led by Otho Hampton with 18 points and six rebounds and Blake Brookman added 16 points and five assists.
The Panthers drop to 8-14 overall and 2-9 in the USA South. FC has now lost 10 of their last 11 games.
CNU is now 13-9 overall and 7-4 in the USA South and are riding its first three-game winning streak of the season.
The Captains return to action this Tuesday as they host Averett with tip-off set for 7:30 pm in the final regular season home game of the season.
