Rock Island, Illinois — 02/14/04 – AUGUSTANA 74, CARTHAGE 62

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - The one-two punch of seniors Shaun Clements (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, IL) and Drew Carstens (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, IL) combined for 37 points and shot 15 of 21 from the field as Augustana defeated Carthage 74-62 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action on Saturday night. Clements made eight of nine shots and pulled down four rebounds while scoring 19 points and Carstens was seven of 12 with three rebounds and five assists for 18 points. Carstens scored on a three point play with :41 left before halftime to give Augustana a 29-28 lead, the first of the game for the Vikings. In the second half Carthage led once (31-30) early in the stanza before Augustana went on a 28-16 run to pull out to a 59-46 lead with 5:47 left in the game. Three point baskets by Jay McAdams-Thornton (Moline HS, Moline, IL) and Carstens and a dunk by Carstens took the lead from five (51-46) at the 7:46 mark to 13 (59-46) at 5:47. Theo Powell was a tremendous force for Carthage, scoring a team leading 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. The Redmen shot just .351 (20-57) from the field while Augustana connected on .529 (27-51) from the floor. With his 19 point performance, Clements pulled to within 11 points of becoming just the 20th player in Augustana history to score 1,000 career points. The Vikings are now 14-8 overall and 8-3 in the CCIW while Carthage dropped to 13-8 and 5-5.
