Cortland State 69, D'Youville 64

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Sophomore Brian Kirchhoff made a game-tying three-pointer with 10.5 seconds left in regulation and hit two crucial treys in overtime as Cortland defeated D'Youville College, 69-64, in a non-league contest. The Red Dragons (14-7) finish their non-league schedule with an 8-1 record. The Spartans slipped to 8-14 with the loss.

Junior Justin O'Garrow led Cortland with a career-best 19 points. Sophomore Jon Rother added 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds and freshman Dave Jutton recorded 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. Jutton set a new career high in assists and matched his previous best rebounding total.

Sanquin Starks paced D'Youville with 20 points. Chris Mays and Ross King each scored 14 points, with Mays also handing out six assists. Justin Cooke led the team with eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Cortland trailed 20-17 with 6:33 left in the first half but scored the final 12 points of the period to take a 29-20 lead. Jutton scored eight points, including two three-pointers, during that run. The Red Dragons led 46-35 with 7:47 remaining, but Starks helped the Spartans rally quickly to take the lead. He scored 11 straight points over a 2:46 span to tie the game at 46-46, and a King layup about a minute later gave D'Youville a 48-46 lead with 4:07 left.

Cortland reestablished a 53-50 lead with 2:20 remaining, but Mays scored six straight points over three consecutive possessions to put the Spartans up 56-53 with 41 seconds left. After a pair of Cortland timeouts, Kirchhoff sank a long three-pointer from the right wing for his first points of the game to knot the score. A final 30-foot three-pointer by D'Youville's Kyle Ward just missed the mark to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, Kirchhoff's three-pointer with 2:28 left gave the Red Dragons a 62-60 lead. King's jumper tied the game with 1:22 left, and the teams traded a pair of free throws each over the next 28 seconds. Kirchhoff hit another shot from behind the arc with 40 seconds remaining to give Cortland the lead for good. D'Youville missed a pair of three-pointers on its next possession and Jutton iced the win with two free throws at the 0:18 mark.
