Hampden-Sydney 80, Lynchburg 57

Lynchburg, VA — Hampden-Sydney’s ninth-ranked basketball team scored an 80-57 victory over Old Dominion Athletic Conference-foe Lynchburg College Wednesday night to pick up its 20th victory of the season. The win secures the Tigers (20-3/13-3 ODAC) eighth-straight 20-win season, while the Hornets fall to 8-15 and 5-11 overall.

Senior forward David Willson (Memphis, TN/MUS) led all players in the game with 15 points and nine rebounds as the Tigers used a strong first-half surge, which put the team ahead, 36-14, at the break, to overwhelm the Hornets. The Tiger defense forced Lynchburg into 17 first-half turnovers, while limiting the Hornets to just six field goals (6-19) and 32 percent shooting in the opening frame. Meanwhile, the two teams combined to attempt 67 free throws as 54 fouls were called in the contest.

Brandon Randall (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) tallied 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while All-American guard Jeff Monroe (Raleigh, NC/Broughton) added 11 points and seven rebounds for Hampden-Sydney. Freshman guard Kevin Forrester (Wytheville, VA/George Wythe) finished with ten points, marking the second time in the last three games he has scored in double-digits.

Lynchburg guard Andy Albright led the Hornets with 13 points, all in the second half, thanks in part to a 3-of-3 effort from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Pete Manos was the only other Hornet to score in double-figures as he finished the game with 11 points.

Overall, the Tigers shot 43 percent (23-53) from the floor, 39 percent (5-13) from three-point range and 81 percent (29-36) from the line, while forcing 27 Lynchburg turnovers and out-rebounding the Hornets, 44-27. Lynchburg shot 34 percent (16-47) from the floor, 29 percent (4-14) from beyond the arc and 68 percent (21-31) from the line.

Hamdpen-Sydney, ranked ninth in the latest D3hoops.com top-25 poll, returns to action Saturday, February 14, as the team hosts second-ranked Randolph-Macon College in a battle between the top two teams in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Game time is set for 2 pm, while the contest will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics beginning at 1:40 pm.
