Augustana 84, Wheaton (Ill.) 77

Wheaton, Ill. — The Wheaton College Thunder, ranked 11th in this week’s D3Hoops.com Top 25, lost 84-77 to Augustana (13-8, 7-3 CCIW) tonight in a key conference contest. The Vikings’ win in Wheaton’s King Arena snapped a 14-game winning streak at home for the Thunder. Wheaton falls to 17-3 overall and is now 6-3 in the CCIW. Illinois Wesleyan now leads the CCIW race with a 6-2 record (a .750 winning percentage); Augustana is second with a 7-3 league record (.700); and Wheaton now has a .666 league winning percentage for third with its 6-3 record in conference play.

Wheaton led the Vikings 14-12 with 14:35 to play in the first half, however that would be the hosts’ final lead of the game. Augustana scored eight unanswered points to take a 20-14 lead with 10:20 remaining. The 8-0 run was part of a larger 25-6 run that put Augustana out to a 37-20 lead with 1:30 left before halftime. Wheaton out-scored the Vikings 10-3 in the final minute of the half to cut Augustana’s lead to 40-30 at halftime. Wheaton made several runs at the Vikings in the second half, but the guests never relinquished the lead.

Senior Joel Kolmodin led the Thunder with 15 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Will Landry scored 14 points and tied his career-high with 15 rebounds, including six offensive caroms and two blocked shots. Junior Jonathan Steven returned to the lineup from injury with 13 points on 5-8 shooting from the field. Junior Martin Trimiew scored 12 points on 5-8 shooting from the floor and Jon Nielson added six assists.

Wheaton shot 43.3% (26-60) from the field, with 35% (7-20) from three-point range and 78.3% (18-23) from the free throw line. The Thunder out-rebounded Augustana 39-36, including an 11-10 edge on the offensive glass.

All-American Drew Carstens led Augustana with 21 points, three assists and two steals. Joe Baumann scored 14 points, including three field goals from behind the three-point arc. Guard Jim Thomas scored 12 points with four assists and center Shaun Clements added 11 points with five rebounds.

The Vikings shot 46.8% (29-62) from the field, 58.3% (7-12) from three-point range and 73.1% (19-26) from the free throw line. Augustana scored 20 points off of Wheaton’s 15 turnovers, while Wheaton turned in just two points off of the Vikings eight turnovers.
